Sadly, like many touring artists, Maria Cherwick and I cancelled our upcoming Home Routes tour of Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. It’s rescheduled for next year and in the meantime, here’s a clip of Flower Hill (Maria and I, joined by Andrea Monro) during a soundcheck in Tilting on Fogo Island two weeks ago. At least we got off the island once this month! Thanks to Paddy Barry for...

Couple 10 heartfelt songs, with rich vocals, and phenomenal live off the floor performances from her band, and you have Sherry Ryan’s best work yet. Listen or buy here: Spotify iTunes Bandcamp ...

At the southern end of the Long Range Mountains in Newfoundland, there is a stretch of land where hurricane force winds known as ‘Wreckhouse winds’ occasionally blow to gusts of 200 km per hour. Award-winning Newfoundland folk/country singer Sherry Ryan takes the title of her latest album, Wreckhouse, from this area of the island notorious for blowing trains right off their tracks. Go to Roots...

“Natural Law” comes galloping out of the gate to open the new Sherry Ryan CD, “Wreckhouse”. In fact there’s a rockin’ 60’s vibe driving the engine that gives spark to this new collection of songs. As a lyricist, Sherry is a straight-shooter, nothing dolled up in symbolism or poetic ramblings. She assesses lessons learned and simplifies her realizations and synopsis in measured words; the mark of...

Newfoundland’s Sherry Ryan kicks off a tour tonight to launch her latest album, called Wreckhouse. The singer-songwriter is a deceptively strong lyricist, her songs uncluttered and spare, and she doesn’t throw around complexities and verbiage. But the imagery is powerful and the metaphors large. In Cool And Clear, she compares a relationship that has ended to the difference between...

It’s been 6 years since her last album, Sister of Mine and a lot can happen in the span of 6 years: births, deaths, marriages, divorce, etc. Wreckhouse is Sherry Ryan’s 4th album, and like each previous release, the songs on Wreckhouse are a soundtrack for all of life’s twists and turns, heartaches and hurrahs. Through it all, Ryan’s warm voice blankets you with comfort, even if you want to...

Here’s a video I made with Flower Hill and the railway pensioners down at the Railway Museum here in St. John’s this past summer. My father, Jim Ryan, helped me write the song and make the video. He loved to tell stories about working on the railway and I always loved this one about Lauchie MacDougall and the Wreckhosue winds.
